Yoga is one of six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy which dates back thousands of years. According to Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, (thought to have been written 2,000 years ago) Ashtanga Yoga is an eight-limbed path of yoga consisting of the practice of yamas (self-restraints), niyamas (personal observances), asanas (postures), pranayama (breath control), pratyahara (sensory withdrawal), dharana (concentration), dhayana (meditation), and samadhi (absorption in the Self).
Hatha yoga is a more modern approach to yoga, thought to have evolved early on in the last Millennium. Hatha yoga involves the physical practice of asana (or postures) and pranayama (breathing techniques) that we recognise in the west today in our yoga classes - the purpose of which, is to prepare the body and mind for Raja Yoga, or meditative practices.
Whether you come to yoga for physical exercise, to improve your health and wellbeing, to explore a spiritual practice, or simply to find time for yourself – it can be an extraordinary journey of self discovery.
Enjoy the ride!
